There are around 260 known species of monkey worldwide ranging from chimpanzees to the tiny pygmy marmoset. The monkey can be anywhere from just a few centimetres tall, with some species of monkey growing to more than a metre tall.

What does a monkey look like?
Monkeys come in all shapes, colors and sizes, and are divided into two groups. Old World monkeys include large species such as baboons, while New World monkeys are smaller. The two groups also organize themselves into different types of social groups.

Where do monkeys live?
Monkeys are found naturally in the jungles and forests of the Southern Hemisphere. There are two ways to classify a monkey, the old world monkey (Asia and Africa) and the new world monkey (South America). Monkeys can be found in rain forests across the tropics. The place where they are most comfortable is the forest canopy. Their long arms and even longer legs propel them through the branches and their tails (sometimes considered a "fifth limb") help with mobility and grasping.

What does a monkey eat?
A monkey will mainly eat foliage, nuts, fruit, berries, insects, with the bigger species of monkey hunting small birds and mammals. Funnily enough monkeys never eat a banana as it is and instead they peel it first and throw away the peel.

Why do monkeys yawn?
When a monkey yawns it apparently means that either the monkey is tired or the monkey is angry about something. Howler monkeys are the loudest species of monkey with the howler monkeys howl being heard as far as 10 miles away.

How do monkeys communicate?
Monkeys use different noises, facial expressions and body movements to communicate with one another, with the monkey grinning being a sign of aggression. However, monkeys express affection and make peace with others by grooming each other.

The quickest way to distinguish between a New World and Old World monkey is the nose. New World monkeys have a flat nose with side-facing nostrils; Old World monkeys have a narrow nose with downard-facing nostrils.
Only one free-ranging population of Old World monkey remains outside of Africa and Asia: the Barbary macaques of Gibraltar. It's unclear whether they were introduced as pets by the Moors or are a remnant of populations that had spread throughout Europe up to 5.5 million years ago.
The loudest monkey of them all is the howler monkey. Its cries can be heard up to three miles away.
There are 264 species of monkey. Old World monkeys (135 species) are more closely related to apes than they are to New World monkeys (129 species).
