    What does a Blue Shark look like?

    The blue shark is one of the most easily recognized sharks. It has a distinct colouration, a deep indigo blue from above and a vibrant blue on its sides, changing to white underneath. The large fins are also easy to spot as they are as long as the distance between the tip of the snout to the last gill slit. The blue shark is a long slender shark. The teeth on both the lower and upper jaw have triangular cusps with smooth or finely serrated edges.

    What does the Blue Shark eat?

    Squid are an important prey item for blue sharks, but their diet also comprises other invertebrates such as cuttlefish and octopus, as well as lobster, shrimp, crab, a large number of bony fishes, small sharks, mammalian carrion and occasional sea birds and seals. Fish caught on longlines during fishing are often attacked and consumed by blue sharks, who in turn often become ensnared in the fishing gear.

    Where do the Blue sharks live?

    The blue shark is an oceanic shark found worldwide in deep temperate and tropical waters from the surface to about 350 meters. In temperate waters the blue shark occurs near the surface. In tropical waters the blue shark is more commonly found in deeper waters as it prefers temperatures between 7 and 16 degrees Celsius. Blue sharks are found off the coasts of every continent, except for Antarctica.

    The blue shark is a solitary, sluggish shark often observed cruising slowly on the surface.Sometimes the blue shark becomes capable of rapid movement if it is excited or feeding.
